Ph Scale - Acid/Alkaline Balance

"When our buffering system reaches overload and we are depleted of reserves, the excess acids are dumped into the tissues. As more and more acid is accumulated, our tissues begin to deteriorate. The acid wastes begin to oxidize (“rust”) the veins and arteries and begin to destroy cell walls and even entire organs. Having an acidic pH is like driving your car with the “check engine” light on. It’s
a sign that something is wrong with the engine; and if we don’t get it fixed, then eventually the car will break down." Dr Robert Young

PS...This picture depicts water as neutral.  That is inaccurate.  Water can range in Ph from neutral to very acidic.  Bottled water and city tap water are generally acidic.  There are a couple of brands of bottled water that I have found that are balanced.  Those are Crystal Geyser and Arrowhead.  For best your own testing periodically to be sure of what you are consuming.

Travel Size .05 oz Net Weight
Full Size.3 oz Net Weight
Here is the story behind the gloss!
Born in 1912, Daisy Byers rode a wagon to a small 1 room school house. Johnny was an older boy and Daisy was in the first grade. Johnny teased Daisy and Daisy didn’t like Johnny. He was just mean in her eyes. One day Johnny asked Daisy, “What is your middle name?” Daisy told him she wasn’t going to tell him because he was always so mean with teasing her. Johnny continued to press and accused Daisy of not having a middle name. This upset Daisy and she told him, “I do too have a middle name! I will tell you tomorrow what it is if you will just be nice to me.” When Daisy got home, she asked her mom and sure enough she did not have a given middle name. She fussed and worried not knowing what she was going to tell Johnny. She knew he would tease her more if he knew she didn’t have a middle name. The next morning as they were going to school Johnny asked Daisy, “So what is your middle name?” Daisy hung her head confused and distraught. As she looked down she saw a patch of pink flowers. She smiled brightly, lifted her head, looked Johnny square in the eye and said, “My middle name is Pink Flower! My name is Daisy Pink Flower!” Well, as you can imagine the teasing never stopped there but Daisy had an informal middle name. Daisy was my grandmother; she passed away, October 19, 2005; one day before her 93rd birthday. This is just one of the many stories she shared with us and we miss her greatly! This Lip gloss is dedicated in loving memory of Grandma Daisy.
A copy of this story is included with each tube of lip gloss.

Magnesium Rich Foods

It's Not a Diet! It's a Change of Lifestyle!

Nutritional rebalanceing is not a diet.  Fat is created to protect the body from toxins and impurites creating unwanted weight.
When a person diets, they may cut calories an exercise which results in fat loss but unless the toxins are removed from the diet and the environment, this leads to rebounding as toxic overload triggers the body's need to create fat.  Resulting in weight regained.

When you rebalance the body by cleansing at a cellular level, toxins are removed from the body creating lean muscle and melting away excess fat.  Keep in mind that proper nutrition and exercise do play important roles.  Oxygenating the body through exercise promotes cleansing on a cellular level.
In order to maintain lean muscle mass and avoid excess fat, maintenance must include nutritional balance and exercise to continually reduce and eliminate toxins from the body.

What the FDA & the USDA reccommend for dietary intake is a joke.  The food pyramid for what your body requires for nutrition is not even close!  If you would like personal assistance on gaining better health.  Please call (308) 254-5373 to schedule your holistic health consultation.

Apple Cider Vinegar First Thing In The Morning!

Start the day out with 1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in an 8 oz glass of water.  Chug it down and follow with another 8 oz glass of water.
It’s so simple and the benefits are just too good to ignore.
1. Boosts you’re immune system
ACV is high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and potassium stimulates brain & nerve function and helps control blood pressure.
2. Balances pH
ACV is an incredibly alkaline food. Yes, on their own it is very acidic, but inside our bodies it turns alkaline.  An alkaline body is the key to good health.
3. Helps with weight loss
It has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. And, my experience is that when I start the day off right, it’s easier to make the best choices for myself the rest of the day.
4. Aids digestion
ACV and water serve to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis—the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving. ACV also helps loosen toxins in the digestive tract.
5. Acts as a gentle, natural diuretic
ACV helps flush out unwanted materials because it increases the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.
6. Helps to clear skin
ACV helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes, purging toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear.
7. Hydrates the lymph system
One cup of water (8 0z) with 1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar helps start the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration and adrenal fatigue. When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue) it can’t perform all of it’s proper functions, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation, and the list goes on. Your adrenals happen to be two small glands that sit on top of your kidneys, and along with your thyroid, create energy. They also secrete important hormones, including aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone secreted by your adrenals that regulates water levels and the concentration of minerals, like sodium, in your body, helping you stay hydrated. Your adrenals are also responsible for regulating your stress response. So, the bottom line is that you really don’t want to mess with a deep state of dehydration! Upon waking from sleep the body is already dehydrated by 4 to 8 cups of water.

By adopting this one practice of drinking a cup of warm water with ACV in the morning for a month can radically alter your hydration level and help to bring your Ph into balance.
In the comments below, tell me which one of these benefits is going to get you to try this morning ritual. Or, if you’re already drinking ACV water, what specific benefits have you noticed?

Cold and Flu Season are Upon us!

Boost your immunity to colds & flu without using a vaccine

1) Take a vitamin D supplement every day.
Get as much sunlight as you can for as late into the year as you can manage. Even getting sunlight on just your face helps produce more vitamin D in your body.
2)Drink immune-boost beverages like green smoothies.  Look for recipes here by keying "smoothie" into the search box.
3) Use a high-quality air filter in your home to filter out bacteria and mold spores that may be circulating inside your home.
4) Get regular exercise to boost your circulation and immune strength. This exercise should be frequent and moderate. Do not over-stress yourself at the gym, or your immune system will be temporarily compromised.
5) Take supplements especially designed to protect your respiratory tract.
6) Take measures to minimize your exposure to immune-damaging chemicals such as those you'll find in laundry products, cosmetics, personal care products and fragrance products. The artificial fragrance chemicals found in most of these products are carcinogenic and cause liver damage.
7) Get off all medications that you can safely eliminate! Work with a Holistic Health Practitioner to accomplish this, of course, as quitting medications cold turkey can be dangerous. Most medications suppress your immune system, liver function, kidney function and even your reproductive function.
8) Eat more meals that are rich in pungent spices. Eat more curry, which is rich in turmeric. Eat more ginger. Eat more cilantro, rosemary, thyme and other rich spices. Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg help boost immune function and taste great, too!  Goldenseal, garlic, echinacea, elderberry, vitamin c.  All of these help too!
9) Clean up your diet. If you're eating cheese and drinking processed milk, those substances are to be avoided during the winter influenza season, especially. Cheese and dairy products tend to cause your lymph system to become congested promoting sinus stuffiness (which is really a lack of sinus circulation) and breathing problems. This can make you more susceptible to physically catching and harboring a virus floating around.
10) Boost your trace minerals intake, especially zinc. Both zinc and selenium are hugely important for immune function. Zinc is especially well known for functioning as a shield support against many viral attacks. One of the best ways to boost your trace minerals intake is to switch to a natural sea salt or a high-mineral salt.
11) Encourage your lymph to move! Light Aerobic Excercise:  Rebounders (mini trampolines) are great for this purpose. Jumping rope also works, as does just hopping in place for a few minutes each day. You can also do arm rotations and other simple movements to keep your lymph circulating. Lymph movement is crucial for immunity.
12) While you're at it, wash your hands more frequently. Many of the infections we receive during the flu season come from us touching contaminated surfaces and then touching our eyes, nose or mouth. The simple act of washing your hands can dramatically cut down on viral infections.
13) At the same time, demand high levels of hygiene by those around you. Ask them to wash their hands, for example. Ask them to boost their immunity with herbs, nutrients and supplements that really work. In fact, when others fail to boost their immune systems, it's actually highly irresponsible on their part. Merely relying on a vaccine is actually putting other people at risk, since vaccines don't work 99 times out of 100.
14) Have an emergency supply of colloidal silver available.
15) Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep compromises the immune system.
16) Reduce your levels of chronic stress, if possible. Stress also compromises your immune system, and it even "uses up" nutrients in your body, leaving you nutritionally depleted.
17) Laugh a little! Laughter is still the best medicine!  Watch some comedy movies, or spend some fun time with family and friends. Laughter boosts immune function at many levels. It's good for your body and your mental health. Find creative ways to expose yourself to comical situations and you'll benefit as a result.

Chemo and Radiation Actually Make Cancer More Malignant
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the developed world, and yet we are still in the dark ages when it comes to treating and understanding it.
The colossal failure of conventional cancer treatments reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what cancer – the "enemy" – actually is. For one, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are both intrinsically carcinogenic treatments. The only justification for their use, in fact, is that they are highly effective at damaging the DNA within cells – with the hope that the cancer cells will be more susceptible to being harmed than the healthy ones (sadly, not always true).
The reality, however, is that the "collateral damage" from treatment is inevitable; it is not a matter of "if," but to what degree the damaging side effects will occur. As in real modern warfare, the decision to strike is often based on deciding how much collateral damage to "civilian" populations is deemed acceptable. This is not unlike the fixation in toxicological risk assessments for drugs, environmental pollutants, food additives, etc., where determining "an acceptable level of harm" (a rather horrible oxymoron) to the exposed population is the first order of business.

Chemo Agent Classified by the WHO as Carcinogenic

The DNA-damaging, or genotoxic effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, according to the prevailing wisdom, are the #1 cause of cancer initiation and promotion. This is known as the "Mutational Theory" of cancer, and has been the dominant explanation for half a century. Therefore it is absolutely disconcerting that the standard of care in cancer treatment today is still the use of genotoxic agents versus substances that are able to selectively harm the "bad" cells, leaving the "good" ones intact; which is also known as "selective cytotoxicty," and is a property characteristic of natural anti-cancer compounds and whole plant extracts. Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than in the case of fruit-derived compounds, such as graviola, where research indicates that fruit extract may be up to 10,000 times more effective at killing certain cancer cells versus adriamycin (not so affectionately named the "red devil" for its lethal side effects) and is highly selective in which cells it kills.
Take the cancer drug tamoxifen, for example. It is classified by the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society as a human carcinogen, and has been documented to cause over two dozen health-destroying side effects, and yet it is still being used as a first line treatment for certain types of breast cancer. Does that really make sense? Even if tamoxifen was effective (which increasingly it is not), does it really matter if it "cures" breast cancer only to cause endometrial or liver cancer (which is often far more deadly than breast cancer) as a direct result of the treatment? Tamoxifen and chemotherapy resistance is increasingly a problem. In the same way that certain pathogenic bacteria become resistant to antibiotics – even becoming stronger after being challenged with them – drug resistance and multi-drug resistance to chemoagents is the canary in the coal mine, indicating the entire paradigm, hinged as it is on patented, highly toxic chemicals, is rearing to collapse.

Radiation Therapy Known To Cause Cancer & Enhance Malignancy

Similarly, radiotherapy is known to induce secondary cancers, along with a wide range of serious adverse effects. A woman whose breast is irradiated is more likely to develop lung cancer, for instance. But its effects may actually be far worse on the primary cancer it is being used to treat...
When a breast tumor is exposed to radiation, the cells within that tumor are not uniform, but have great heterogeneity. Some of the cells are fast-replicating, whereas some are slow-replicating and benign. Some cells are older, technically senescent, and by their very existence are keeping neighboring cells within the tumor and with greater potential for malignancy from breaking out into invasive growth. There are also cancer stem cells, which are technically slower-replicating and therefore less likely to be destroyed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and yet which are responsible for re-seeding and fueling the growth of the tumor itself with a theoretical limitless resupply of daughter cells.
Radiotherapy has been shown to increase the survival and self-renewing capacity of these breast cancer initiating cells by up to 30-fold, which means that while a radiation treatment may initially regress a tumor's volume/mass, it may actually be selecting out the more radiation-resistant and aggressive subpopulation of tumor cells which ultimately lead to higher malignancy. This promotion of self-initiating cancer cells is also true for chemotherapy, of course. Incidentally, the low-dose radiation used to diagnose breast cancers in x-ray mammography is likely causing far more cancers in women over time than it is said to prevent. If you read the actual peer-reviewed medical literature on the subject you may be surprised to find that the low-dose ionizing radiation is actually far more carcinogenic (3-4 fold higher) than the high-dose radiation it is often compared to in radiation risk assessments. In fact, one of the most well known breast cancer associated genes, namely, BRCA1/BRCA2, confers greater susceptibility to radiation induced breast cancer in those who have it. In other words, staying away from medical radiation, diagnostic or therapeutic, may be essential to avoid the cancer it is being used to both "prevent" and "treat."
Cancer Resistance

Why Conventional Treatment Fails & Will Continue To Do So

The failure of chemotherapy can work in the same way. When you expose a diverse population of breast tumor cells to a highly toxic agent, a normal response is to become damaged to the point of dying. But cancer may not be a strict random mutation process, but an ancient survival program unmasked; that is, the cancer cell may be drawing from a far more ancient evolutionary and genetic "tool kit" which enables it to survive far harsher cellular environments, e.g. chemical exposure, low oxygen, higher availability of glucose/fructose, acidic pH, etc. and therefore the addition of highly toxic chemotherapy-type chemicals will selectively kill the weaker, and technically healthier (more benign) cells within a breast tumor, while creating the very conditions within which the malignant and more chemoresistant cancer cells may thrive. Multidrug-resistance genes and proteins are involved. When attacked by a chemical (xenobiotic) the cancer cell may "regress" and activate the genetic equipment that enables it to efficiently push out (efflux) the chemoagent being used, surviving, while its neighboring weaker (though technically more normal and healthier) cells die off.
Can you see, then, how radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be responsible for driving a cancer into greater malignancy, at the very moment that it is harming the rest of the body, compromising the immune system (damage to the bone marrow and direct harm to the immune cells)? The incurability of pancreatic cancer vis-à-vis chemotherapy and radiation, therefore, may reflect how the standard treatments themselves are driving the patient into premature death. When the average pancreatic cancer patient (using most chemo and radiation protocols) lives no more than 6 months, do we say that the cancer killed them, or the treatments?
Standard operating procedures is to write off the patients death as being "caused" by an "exceptionally aggressive" form of cancer, rather than to admit that the very treatments may have transformed a relatively slow growing tumor into a rapidly proliferating and invasive one. Think of it this way: if you were being blasted with chemicals and radiation, and you were seeing your neighbors dropping like flies, would you relocate? Can you, therefore, blame a subpopulation of tumor cells, having survived chemotherapy and radiotherapy while it's neighboring cells did not, moving to another tissue – say, bone, or brain – in order to survive? Cancer, after all, is something our body does (and likely to survive) and not something that happens to it, as if the genes in our body just went off one day like a cancer time-bomb, fatalistically predetermined by the less than perfect genes we inherited from our predecessors.
Given the likelihood that the conventional cancer industry is often not only failing to improve the quality and length of the lives of those who it treats, but quite the opposite, reducing the quality and length of their lives, the time has come to look for safe, effective, affordable, inexpensive and accessible alternatives to patented chemicals and ionizing radiation in the prevention and treatment of cancer. And the solution may be as close to us as our kitchen spice racks:

The Case For Turmeric

While US law presently forbids the medicinal use of natural substances, turmeric has been used in ancient Indian medicine for thousands of years, and curcumin, which gives the spice its golden hue, is one of the most extensively studied natural compounds of all time, with 4,588 references to studies performed on it on the National Library of Medicine's bibliographic database known as Medline [as of 2.25.2012]. Yet, despite having been shown to have therapeutic value in more than 500 diseases in animal and test tube studies, it still has not been the subject of extensive human clinical trials. As a public service has indexed curcumin's anti-cancer properties in more than 50 cancers, with the top 10 most compelling cancers applications in cancer prevention and treatment listed below:

What Has the Actual Research Shown?

Type of Cancer Curcumin Has Potential Value In Preventing or treating Number of Peer-Reviewed Studies Supporting Its Therapeutic Properties
Breast Cancer 58
Colorectal Cancer 23
Colon Cancer 51
Prostate Cancer 42
Pancreatic Cancer 24
Cancers: Drug Resistant 40
Lung Cancer 37
Liver Cancer 27
Cancer Metastasis 32
Skin Cancer 15

Sources: curcumin

As one can see by the density of research referenced above, curcumin holds great promise. First, it has an exceedingly high margin of safety relative to conventional drugs. As an example, the dose at which it will acutely kill 50% of the animals given it is 2,000 mg/kg, whereas it only takes 115 mg/kg of 5-fluorouracil (conventional chemo agent) to produce the same effects. What is even more amazing is that it has been repeatedly demonstrated to possess both chemoprotective and chemosensitizing properties, which means that it will both enhance the positive cancer-killing effects of conventional chemotherapy, while at the same time protect healthy cells which may be susceptible to being harmed by chemotherapy. contains 57 studies on its chemosensitizing properties and 70 on its chemoprotective properties for reference. As if this wasn't impressive enough, it also has profound radioprotective and radiosensitizing properties. Radioprotective substances protect the healthy cells in the body from being damaged by radiotherapy, and radiosensitizing substances help the radiation kill the cancer cells, making them "more sensitive" to the radiation treatments. GreenMedInfo contains 15 studies on curcumin's radiosensitizing properties and 23 studies on its radioprotective properties.
Given this growing and compelling body of research, should not curcumin be considered for use in cancer treatment? And if not as a first-line treatment, then at the very least as an adjuvant in integrative cancer care?

Are You Getting Adequate Amounts of Vitamin D3?

While many factors may predispose a woman to breast cancer risk, having low vitamin D appears to facilitate cancer’s aggressive spread to other areas of the body, according to research presented this week at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities.
The new research1 is an extension of earlier research showing that vitamin D levels below 20 are associated with significant breast cancer risk, whereas levels above 40 are associated with reduced risk. The average vitamin D level in women with breast cancer is 27.
In the new research, women with breast cancer whose vitamin D levels were below 20 were eight times as likely to experience the spreading of that cancer compared to women with vitamin D levels above 40. Since spreading of the disease is associated with increased risk of death from breast cancer it seems to only make sense for every woman to ensure that her vitamin D levels are at least 40.

The FDA should allow a health claim for vitamin D and breast cancer risk reduction, as well as to prevent more serious cases of breast cancer. However, the FDA is much more interested in ensuring that the profits of the cancer sickness industry are maintained, which includes having a steady stream of new customers. The Obama FDA is even worse than the Bush FDA in terms of aggressively attacking valid health claims for dietary supplements. When the citizens of the U.S. finally realize the “Earth is not flat” the FDA will be one of the first bureaucracies to be shown the exit.

Do You Drink Milk/Eat Dairy Products?

vegetarian vegan reason to avoid milkWhat could be more American than a glass of milk? Cow's milk, that is.
In light of this common perception, the time is long overdue to add the milk mustache to that ever-growing list of American myths. Human beings are not designed to drink any milk except human milk (only during infancy, of course).  Consuming dairy products—milk, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, ice cream, etc.—is not green and it's not healthy.
Milk often contains unwanted ingredients.
Under current industrial methods, cow's milk is often a toxic bovine brew of man-made ingredients like bio-engineered hormones, antibiotics (55% of U.S. antibiotics are fed to livestock), and pesticides—all of which are bad for us and the environment. For example, unintentional pesticide poisonings kill an estimated 355,000 people globally each year. In addition the drugs pumped into livestock often re-visit us in our water supply.
Cows’ milk – although heavily marketed as healthy – isn’t as desirable as the industry would like people to believe.
Scientific research into the composition and consumption of another mammal’s milk shows it contains many things which can harm our health; including hormones, growth factors, animal protein, saturated fat, cholesterol. Up to 400,000 million somatic (pus) cells are legally allowed in each litre. Dairy products have been linked to breast, bowel, ovarian and prostate cancer, diabetes, asthma, digestive issues and numerous other conditions. Scientists, nutritionists and health organizations have an increasing interest and concern about negatives effects of dairy consumption on human health.
The dairy industry's biased health claims that cow's milk contains calcium and is therefore good for us are over simplistic. Cow's milk is not a natural food for humans, we are the only mammal to consume it after infancy and to consume another animal's milk.

On top of all that, one of the best sources of calcium without all the added side effects is dark leafy green vegetables.  Organic of course!

Do Vegetarians Get Enough Nutrition?

healthy vegan diet

Compared to many mammals on the planet, humans are tiny with much less muscle mass. However, these giants animals, like hippos and giraffes and horses and cows are vegans. They eat plant-based diets and they grow strong and heavy muscles without the addition of meat to their diets. This is because protein is found in plant foods. Every plant food has protein in it in varying amounts. The same goes for calcium. By eating meat and dairy, we are just consuming the middleman, while taking out all the fiber and adding a lot of fat. Even if you don’t follow the ethics part of veganism, the diet speaks for itself. It’s healthier because there is less fat and more essential nutrients in plants.

B12 deficiency can cause blindness. But it is very rare and there are lots of foods that contain B12. But as a measure of protection against the unlikely possibility that this might happen to a vegan, Dr. John McDougall suggests taking a B12 supplement.
The vegan diet is healthier than the Standard American Diet, regardless of what omnivores want to believe. In ten years when you are running marathons and have almost no cholesterol (except what your body naturally produces) while they’re obese and lying on the couch, ask them again.

Aloe Vera - Add It To Your Smoothies

Do you ever take Aloe Vera in your smoothies or juices? I have a bottle of Lily of the Desert Aloe in the fridge, and I try to take at least 1-2 oz per day. (if you have colitis or other intestinal issues it may irritate you so check that out first). It's great for so many things including healing skin conditions like acne and eczema! For those of you who have access to the organic plant, fresh is best.

Is Your Scent Making You Sick? Perfumes And Fragrances Are Everywhere

Is your scent making you ill? Today's obsession with perfuming everything from candles to bin liners could be to blame
Nearly a third of people may suffer adverse health effects from being exposed to scents

Nearly a third of people may suffer adverse health effects from being exposed to scents
The smell of fresh air is becoming something of a distant memory, thanks to our increasing use of fragrance. From air fresheners to scented candles, perfumed loo roll and bin liners, in-car scents and even scented socks, we live in a miasma of scent.
Share a lift or train carriage and the aroma of spray deodorant and perfume can be overwhelming. Recent figures show seven in ten use air fresheners or scented candles to keep our homes smelling sweet.
Yet recent reports suggest that perfumed products could affect our health, causing problems including allergies, asthma and migraine, and even interfere with sexual desire.
One leading expert suggests nearly a third of people suffer adverse health effects from being exposed to scents. A major problem is so-called ‘contact’ allergy — where perfumes and scented products trigger eczema and dermatitis when they come into contact with skin.
Molecules in the product trigger an immune response, causing itchiness and even scaly, cracked skin.
About one in 20 is thought to be affected by fragrance allergy — though this number may be growing.
‘Allergies are on the increase, and the amount of perfumed products is also on the rise,’ says Dr Susannah Baron, consultant dermatologist at Kent & Canterbury hospital, and BMI Chaucer Hospital.
‘Fragrance allergy can show up as contact dermatitis in the site a perfumed product is applied, or as a flare-up of existing eczema. It can be a real problem.’
In July, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety asked perfume manufacturers to list potential allergens in their product after reports that they triggered skin reactions.
Earlier this year, the U.S. state of New Hampshire banned workers from wearing scents to protect their co-workers.
Often it may not be immediately obvious that you’ve developed a fragrance allergy, says Dr Baron.
‘You don’t react immediately; the body notes that it does not like the chemical and develops “memory cells”, which cause inflammation when the body is next exposed to this chemical.
‘Gradually, as you are exposed more and more, the body ramps up its reaction, until it becomes more noticeable to you.’
People with pre-existing eczema are particularly vulnerable. ‘The eczema worsens in areas in contact with perfumes or perfume- containing shampoos, conditioners and shower gels,’ says Dr Baron.
But even those without allergies can be at risk of fragrance allergy.
‘You can become suddenly allergic to perfumes and personal care products that you have been using for years.
‘You can also have problems with unexpected products such as scented toilet roll and scented wipes which can cause irritation.’
And strong scents can also cause headaches.
According to Dr Vincent Martin, a headache specialist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, fragrances activate the nose’s nerve cells, stimulating the nerve system associated with head pain.
UK charity Migraine Action warns that intense or penetrating smells can even trigger migraine for the same reason.
To minimise risks, migraine sufferers are advised to keep diaries of all triggers including scent, so they can minimise contact.
Meanwhile, products such as plug-in deodorisers and even mild air fresheners contain chemicals that could trigger asthma attacks, experts have warned.
Charity Asthma UK says that perfumes can irritate the airways in those with asthma, causing breathing problems.
Dr Stanley Fineman, of the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic in the U.S., says those with asthma are especially sensitive, and that his research indicates a change in lung function when exposed to certain chemical fragrances.
People with eczema are particularly vulnerable to perfumes and should wash with non-fragranced emollient products
People with eczema are particularly vulnerable to perfumes and should wash with non-fragranced emollient products
The fashion for scented intimate products can be linked to health issues, too, says Dr Sovra Whitcroft, a gynaecologist at the Surrey Park Clinic, Guildford.
‘The problem with perfumed products is that they change the natural pH or acidity of the vagina.
‘The normal pH is four to five. If this is altered and made less acidic, it loses its natural protection and bacteria are allowed to thrive and multiply. The very product designed to improve body odour can, in a short space of time, do the opposite by contributing to an overgrowth of odour-producing bacteria.
‘And many strong chemicals and perfumes can have a direct irritant effect on the sensitive mucosal lining of the vagina as well as the relatively thin and delicate skin, causing contact dermatitis or inflammation. This can make the area more prone to harbouring bacteria, causing secondary infections.
‘In the longer term, if products containing talcum powder are sprayed around the vaginal area, the tiny particles can be driven up into the female reproductive system.
‘There have been many studies suggesting a link between these talcum particles and ovarian cancer and while it is difficult to know whether these results are true, it is important to steer clear from anything which can cause such potential harm.
‘The truth is as long as a woman is healthy, washes thoroughly with soap and water frequently and changes her underwear every day there should be no need for cover-up deodorants. Using a chemical perfume to cover potential odours may mask an underlying infection or even cause one.’
Commonly used chemicals in fragrances include synthetic musk, linked to hormone disruption.
A 2009 study of Austrian college students published in the journal Science of the Total Environment found that those who used the most perfume and scented lotion also had the highest levels of synthetic musks, including Galaxolide and Tonalide, in their blood.
These can bind to and stimulate human oestrogen receptors; they have also been shown to affect male hormone receptors.
‘Fragrance suggests cleanliness — yet people are smelling a potentially hazardous chemical mixture,’ says Anne Steinemann, professor of civil and environmental engineering and public affairs at the University of Washington, who has investigated the effects of scents on public health for more than a decade. ‘We often use them to mask one problem — as with air fresheners — but create a greater one — adding toxic chemicals to the air.’
Two surveys she did found more than 30 per cent of the public report adverse health effects from being exposed to scents in ordinary life.
‘Since then, I have received thousands of messages from people all over the world saying they get sick around fragranced products.
‘They are suffering seizures, losing consciousness, can’t concentrate on work, as well as suffering rashes, migraine headaches and asthma attacks.’
Longer term, our obsession with artificial scent may even affect sexual desire, suggest Mel Rosenberg, professor of microbiology at Tel Aviv University.
‘For thousands of years, we’ve been applying the natural scents of flowers and animals to attract people and to appear more sexually attractive,’ he says.
‘Now we have learned how to replicate natural smells identically and to create chemical fragrances much more cheaply.
‘We fragrance our world so much that if odour recognition is important in sexual biology, and I believe it is vital, we are falling for the wrong people.
‘You could fall in love with a girl because of the scent of her hair conditioner, not her natural hormones.
‘We should pick a mate by natural odour. That’s why we traditionally go dancing and play sports — where we get natural odours.’
The biggest problem is detecting the substance to blame. Since the body reacts slowly, an affected part of skin could have been touched by fragranced soap or deodorant, or clothes washed in fragranced powder as much as perfume applied directly. So finding a culprit is hard.
Lindsey McManus of charity Allergy UK warns: ‘Many chemicals have the potential to irritate skin, including rubber or formaldehyde, which is added to preserve the fragrance. People have to be their own detectives.’
But it is not just chemicals we have to watch out for: Dr Baron cites a natural ingredient — balsam of Peru (a sticky aromatic liquid that comes from cutting the bark of the tree Myroxyolon balsamum,) which is common in fragrances — as a trigger for fragrance allergy.
Would reducing the number of scents surrounding us help? Dr Baron does not think it is the number of fragrances around us that may be responsible for rising numbers of cases, ‘but there are more cases of eczema so that increases the chance of contact allergies developing’.
She recommends that if you do have sensitive or eczema-prone skin, use non-fragranced products if possible in order to prevent an allergic reaction.
Eczema sufferers should limit their use of soap and instead wash with non-fragranced emollient products.
But avoiding all perfume is not an easy task. Though you can have allergy testing for the constituents in fragrances and other common allergens at your local dermatology department, we are surrounded by scented products.
‘Even if you know which fragrance causes a problem, it can be difficult to avoid as most personal care products — soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, sun cream, shaving gel and washing powder — contain fragrances,’ says Dr Baron.
