Eat to Live!

Over and over I stress this simple belief and here we are again!  Choose wisely!

Symptoms of Anemia

Anemia = A decrease in the number of red blood cells which means your blood does not carry enough oxygen to the rest of your body.  The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency which is generally caused by improprer diet. If this is a problem that you struggle with, increase your intake of dark leafy green vegetables, artichokes, apricots, beans, lentils, chick peas, nuts, prunes, and raisins.

The Dangers of Soy

DID YOU KNOW… that contrary to popular belief, soy foods cannot contribute to a healthy life?

  • High levels of phytic acid in soy reduce assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Phytic acid in soy is not neutralized by ordinary preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting and long, slow cooking, but only with long fermentation. High-phytate diets have caused growth problems in children.
  • Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals, soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth.
  • Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.Soy phytoestrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer.
  • In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
  • Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body's requirement for B12.
  • Soy foods increase the body's requirement for Vitamin D.
  • Toxic synthetic Vitamin D2 is added to soy milk.
  • Fragile proteins are over-denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein.
  • Processing of soy protein results in the formation of toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines.
  • Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods to mask soy's unpleasant taste.
  • Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum, which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys

Super Immunity

"Super immunity can best be defined as the body’s immune system working to its fullest potential. Modern science has advanced to the point where we have evidence that the right raw materials and nutritional factors can double or triple the protective power of the immune system. If you learn to fill every cell receptor lock with the right nutrient key and meet the demands of each cell, the body’s defenses take on superhero qualities—and you will hardly ever get sick again. More important, this change from average immunity to Super Immunity can save your life.”

This doesn't necessarily mean that you will never get sick again but the odds become greatly stacked in your favor!  As I posted a couple of days ago.  I very rarely get sick and when I do, the symptoms are much less than the average person.

Was It The Flu or Something I Ate?

First of all, let me point out...I don't get sick.

With that said, Monday night about midnight, I started having all the symptoms that nobody wants.  The aches, diarrhea, and rumblings in my stomach, all the various symptoms of yes, you guessed it, the stomach flu.  All of these wonderful things went on through the night until about 5:30 this morning.
At that time, we had a breakthrough (literally), I threw up.

Through the night the nausea and diarrhea kept me running (pun intended). After all night and eliminating the salad I had for dinner this morning.  I have decided to do a fasting cleanse.  At the moment however, I am concerned about dehydration.  I haven't been able to hold any fluids for right at 8 hours.

Dehydration can be a very dangerous situation with many symptoms and outcomes of it's own.  When the body is eliminating toxins at this rate of speed, the body is working overtime.  It is critically important to keep hydrated even if the thought of drinking water doesn't sound good or you feel like it's running right through you.  Even if the body is still rejecting fluids, getting water in will help fight the infection that your body is working so desperately to purge.  It will also help to alleviate muscle cramping and pain.

Dehydration is the point where many people wind up taking a vacation to the hospital.  So what can we do to avoid dehydration at times like these?

1. Take in water frequently, even if you don't feel like you want it.
2. Dissolve ice chips in your mouth.  This allows for a cooling, refreshing feel and though it doesn't contain a lot of water, it helps.
3. Sip your water slowly and frequently.  This may take longer to get it in but it tends to settle your stomach better.
4 Using a straw may help especially if you are still bed ridden.
5. Drinking Pedialite will help to replenish lost electrolytes however, be sure to get the one that doesn't have corn syrup.
6. Squeezing fresh lemon or lime into your water will help to replenish electrolytes as well.
7. Room temperature or hot tea is often easier to hold down during stomach upset.
8. Fresh fruit juice or vegetable broth are also beneficial in
re-hydration but take care to check the ingredients avoiding added sugars or corn syrup which may cause symptoms to worsen.

Dehydration can cause you can become lethargic, cranky, dizzy and a whole host of other symptoms too. Drinking an appropriate amount of fluids not only hydrates your body but also cleanses your system and helps your body flush out the toxins… transports nutrients… lubricates joints… aids your digestive system… and helps escort waste products out of your body.  Overall staying hydrated will help you heal faster.

So, point of interest.  If you have read this far, I applaud you! Thank you for your focus and your interest!  I was "sick" for approximately 6 hours.  About the time I was feeling better, my husband, Dave came down with the same thing.  I generally tend to eat far more healthy than Dave does but we were out of town this weekend...I am pretty sure we got some bad food.  Dave has been down for about 7.5 hours now.  His bout of this yuck seems to be more difficult.  He has a fever and he's my husband...It seems he needs more babying than I do but that's just a side note!

Here is to your continued health and hydration!  I hope you avoid all food born illness and flu viruses this season!

ER Visits Tied To Energy Drinks

From 2007 to 2011, the government estimates the number of emergency room visits involving the neon-labeled beverages shot up from about 10,000 to more than 20,000. Most of those cases involved teens or young adults, according to a survey of the nation's hospitals released late last week by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The report doesn't specify which symptoms brought people to the emergency room but calls energy drink consumption a "rising public health problem" that can cause insomnia, nervousness, headache, fast heartbeat and seizures that are severe enough to require emergency care.
Several emergency physicians said they had seen a clear uptick in the number of patients suffering from irregular heartbeats, anxiety and heart attacks who said they had recently downed an energy drink.
More than half of the patients considered in the survey who wound up in the emergency room told doctors they had downed only energy drinks. In 2011, about 42 percent of the cases involved energy drinks in combination with alcohol or drugs, such as the stimulants Adderall or Ritalin.
"A lot of people don't realize the strength of these things. I had someone come in recently who had drunk three energy drinks in an hour, which is the equivalent of 15 cups of coffee," said Howard Mell, an emergency physician in the suburbs of Cleveland, who serves as a spokesman for the American College of Emergency Physicians. "Essentially he gave himself a stress test and thankfully he passed. But if he had a weak heart or suffered from coronary disease and didn't know it, this could have precipitated very bad things."
The findings came as concerns over energy drinks have intensified following reports last fall of 18 deaths possibly tied to the drinks — including a 14-year-old Maryland girl who died after drinking two large cans of Monster Energy drinks. Monster does not believe its products were responsible for the death.
Two senators are calling for the Food and Drug Administration to investigate safety concerns about energy drinks and their ingredients.
The energy drink industry says its drinks are safe and there is no proof linking its products to the adverse reactions.
Late last year, the FDA asked the U.S. Health and Human Services to update the figures its substance abuse research arm compiles about emergency room visits tied to energy drinks.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's survey was based on responses it receives from about 230 hospitals each year, a representative sample of about 5 percent of emergency departments nationwide. The agency then uses those responses to estimate the number of energy drink-related emergency department visits nationwide.
The more than 20,000 cases estimated for 2011 represent a small portion of the annual 136 million emergency room visits tracked by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The FDA said it was considering the findings and pressing for more details as it undertakes a broad review of the safety of energy drinks and related ingredients this spring.
"We will examine this additional information ... as a part of our ongoing investigation into potential safety issues surrounding the use of energy-drink products," FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said in a statement.
Beverage manufacturers fired back at the survey, saying the statistics were misleading and taken out of context.
"This report does not share information about the overall health of those who may have consumed energy drinks, or what symptoms brought them to the ER in the first place," the American Beverage Association said in a statement. "There is no basis by which to understand the overall caffeine intake of any of these individuals — from all sources."
Energy drinks remain a small part of the carbonated soft drinks market, representing only 3.3 percent of sales volume, according to the industry tracker Beverage Digest. Even as soda consumption has flagged in recent years, energy drinks sales are growing rapidly.
In 2011, sales volume for energy drinks rose by almost 17 percent, with the top three companies — Monster, Red Bull and Rockstar — each logging double-digit gains, Beverage Digest found. The drinks are often marketed at sporting events that are popular among younger people such as surfing and skateboarding.
From 2007 to 2011, the most recent year for which data was available, people from 18 to 25 were the most common age group seeking emergency treatment for energy drink-related reactions, the report found.
"We were really concerned to find that in four years the number of emergency department visits almost doubled, and these drinks are largely marketed to younger people," said Al Woodward, a senior statistical analyst with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration who worked on the report.
Emergency physician Steve Sun said he had seen an increase in such cases at the Catholic hospital where he works on the edge of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
"I saw one young man who had mixed energy drinks with alcohol and we had to admit him to the hospital because he was so dehydrated he had renal failure," Sun said. "Because he was young he did well in the hospital, but if another patient had had underlying coronary artery disease, it could have led to a heart attack."

Note:  Avoid processed energy drinks.  If you are looking for healthy energy, drink a green smoothie!  Key "smoothie" into the search box for numerous recipes.

Health Benefits of Onions

*Better oral health — This may seem weird for some people since onions negatively affect the smell of their breath, but chewing raw onion is known to improve the strength of the teeth and fight off bacteria which can cause tooth decay.
*Prevents colon cancer — The particular plant-derived flavonoid in onions, called quercetin, boosts the immune system while preventing the development of tumors.

*Anti-bacterial and anti-microbial ingredients — Since onions often evoke unwanted tears, it can be quite annoying to slice up an onion. This effect is caused by the sulphides and thiosulfinates. Because of these two components, it is easier to prevent illnesses such as E. coli, bacillus subtilis and salmonella.

*Cardiovascular improvement — Onions help out in preventing formation of blood clots. Hence, this ensures that blood circulation operates smoothly. Without the clogs and clots in arteries, there will be a lower chance of suffering from heart attacks as well.

*Glucose control — Onions have chromium. This mineral improves the cell’s ability to respond to insulin.

*Sinus relief — For a clogged nose and sinusitis problems, onions can also help in loosening the mucous so that breathing would become easier. Since onion helps in circulating the mucous used to be stuck in your sinuses, it would be easier to expel it too so that the problem would not reoccur.

*Use onions for an earache. Try cooking an union until soft by boiling it in water, then place it on a cloth and then on your ear. Helping to ease pain and dizziness, onions make up one option for home remedies for earaches.

The components of onions possess many positive attributes. Onions are rich in essential oils, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, giving the health benefits of onions great potential.

What Are You doing To Control Your Stress?

What are you doing to control your stress?

Learning to deal with stress effectively is a worthwhile effort, even if you already consider yourself capable of handling anything life sends your way.

Many of the most common long-term stressors—family illness, divorce, recovery after injury, career pressures, relocations—often arise without warning and simultaneously. Stress management is particularly valuable if your family has a history of hypertension and other forms of heart disease.

Identify the cause. You may find that your stress arises from something that's easy to correct.

Monitor your moods. If you feel stressed during the day, write down what caused it along with your thoughts and moods. Again, you may find the cause to be less serious than you first thought.

Make time for yourself at least two or three times a week. Even ten minutes a day of "personal time" can help refresh your mental outlook and slow down your body's stress response systems. Turn off the phone, spend time alone in your room, exercise, or meditate to your favorite music.

Walk away when you're angry. Before you react, take time to mentally regroup. Then look at the situation again. Walking or other physical activities will also help you work off steam.

Analyze your schedule. Assess your priorities and delegate whatever tasks you can (e.g., order out dinner after a busy day, share household responsibilities). Eliminate tasks that are "shoulds" but not "musts."

Set reasonable standards for yourself and others. Don't expect perfection.

Above all develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour.  He provides a peace that passes all understanding as we go through our stresses and trials.

Depression and Emotional Slump

Do you ever get down, depressed in a slump where it feels like absolutely nothing has gone right and perhaps never will?

Poor Eeyore... I think I lost my tail, again.  :(  Pessimistic, gloomy, grumpy and cynical all wrapped up in emotional chaos.

Those days when you really don't want to roll out of bed and you certainly don't want to go anywhere or see anybody, nobody not even your best friend, your spouse and especially not your in-laws?

Well no offense to the in-laws there, it's not their problem.  The problem if you really assess what is going on is probably your diet.  What we eat directly affects our health and our emotions too.  Lot's of unnatural and processed foods, fatty carb's and probably a good intake of sugar too are often the culprits eaten over the last few days leading up to a major slump leaving us feeling emotionally our of balance, dis-interested, listless and even lethargic.

The slump is a slump of the digestive system, congestion everywhere and probably a pretty good bout of constipation too.  Most of the time when you get back on a good healthy regiment of fruits and vegetables, vegetables and fruits with maybe even some added fiber like psyllium husks, things will get moving again.  Add moderate exercise and you will find that your slump simply just slinks away.  You can litterally flush it down the drain!

No more blues and dissatisfaction with the entire world.  No more blahs and bah humbugs, no more regrets, it's time to move on and get back in the groove!

What have you noticed contributes to your mood swings and depression?  What do you do to combat these issues?

Whole Food Nutrition: Smoothies vs Juicing

http://0.tqn.com/d/cocktails/1/6/q/A/-/-/hbbigmouth_juicer.jpgThere is a big push for juicing and juicing has it's place for extreme cases of illness but for most people, I suggest whole food nutrition.   In general, that means:  raw foods.  Personally, I don't eat a diet of entirely raw foods but I do know that these are the foods that God designed and he designed our digestive systems to break down and use the vitamins, minerals and the fibers from raw fruits and vegetables.  Therefore, I make it my goal to eat a diet of predominately raw foods and I would like to encourage you to do the same.
So, what's the difference between smoothies and juice?
Smoothies are drinks composed of blended whole foods (minus the peels on most).  Generally speaking, smoothies are intended as a health promoting drink.  There are some that add ice cream , yogurt or other processed foods to the mix.  I would encourage you to avoid these drinks.
Smoothies are prepared in a blender.  The foods are broken down to a liquid form when they are combined with a liquid and mixed together to a smooth consistency.  Smoothies retain all the fiber of the produce allowing you to consume a larger quantity and variety without as much work in breaking down the whole foods themselves.   Smoothies take a large burden off of the digestive system.  The pulp or fiber in the smoothies as well as proteins are not completely broken down or removed as they are in juicing.
Dark leafy green vegetables are the most important aspect of the human diet and most of us don't get the volume we need.  By consuming smoothies, we can cover up the taste of the greens with other more palatable produce like fruits.
Moving on to the comparison of juice. Juice is the liquid of the plant, with all of the plants fiber removed. Juices are considered healing drinks and can be just that as they are loaded with vitamins and mineralsBUT WAIT!  NOT THE JUICE YOU BUY IN THE STORE THAT IS PROCESSED AND PASTEURIZED!  These drinks have little to no nutritional value.
The juice I am talking about is fresh squeezed or freshly juiced in a juicing machine using fresh fruits and vegetables (the fresher, the better and of course organic whenever possible).  That goes for making smoothies or fresh juices.
Juicing removes the fiber from the produce and often removes some of the protein along with it.  Juicing is the easiest and most readily available form of nutrition for your digestive system.  Proteins can be very hard for your digestive system to break down, particularly if your digestive system is already on the sluggish side.  Juicing is also most beneficial for anyone who has a moderate to severe illness and is looking for optimal nutrition in it's most dense form.
If you are looking to implement foods for a more healthy lifestyle into your 2013 regiment, consider adding smoothies or fresh juices to your menu.  Both are excellent health boosters and should be consumed on an empty stomach.  Remember rich, dark leafy greens are the produce of choice and you can find several smoothie recipes right here!  Just go to the search box and key in "smoothie"
Cheers to your good health in 2013!
Small warning:  If you are starting to add juicing or smoothies to your diet.  Your body will probably go through a detox periodDuring detoxification, you may see and feel a whole host of short term side effects.  They may be as mild as seeing tar and debris removed from your body to nausea, headaches, flu like symptoms and diarrhea.  These symptoms can sometimes be extreme.  I would encourage you to keep on your program to allow enough time for your body to purge.  If you have questions and or comments regarding this article or how your body is responding to dietary changes, you are welcome to give me a call at 308-254-5373
