Liver Cleanse
As we begin a new year, it's a great time to consider implementing a liver cleanse to help rid your body of excess toxins accumulated through the holidays and to give yourself the best start to a healthy 2014!
I find that completing a liver cleanse allows my body to perform at a higher level. If you feel sluggish, tired, low energy this is a great cleanse for you! You may want to do it just to remove toxins from over indulgence through the holidays too. Here is the cleanse that I do myself and reccommend to clients: I find that this cleanse as compared to others though more lengthy in time is much more thorough and gentle on the digestive system. Cleaning The Liver
The Liver is the major area of detoxification for the body. Here, in addition to metabolic wastes, is where chemical pollutants, environmental contamination, food preservatives, etc. are removed from the body. You should be just as concerned about th condition of your liver as you are your heart. If you have had hepatitis, cirrhosis over the liver, infectious mononucleosis or other liver damage, you should become very protective of this vital organ. The intake of anything which places undue stress on the liver should be eliminated. Such a list would include: chemicals of any kind, drugs, synthetic foods, food additives such as coloring, preservatives, MSG’s, etc.. Alcoholic beverages, carbonated beverages, hair sprays and chemical laden personal products are also a concern because though you may not consume your hairspray, shampoo or body lotion, the chemicals are still absorbed through your skin which is your body’s largest organ.
The Liver Flush
One of the most important procedures for persons over 25 years of age is the liver flush. If you are above 25 years of age, you should do this along with a good nutritional program with the consumption of copious amount of leafy green vegetables (iceberg lettuce does not count, it has NO nutritional value). I’m talking about: Kale, Spinach, Broccoli, Wheat grass, Alfalfa, Spirulina, Sea weed and Algae to name a few.
This cleanse should be repeated every six months.
1. I start my cleanse on Sunday. From Sunday through the following Friday at noon, drink as much 100% Apple Juice as your appetite will permit, in addition to regular meals. You may use apple juice or apple cider (organic is preferred). Be sure to read the label and obtain a juice that has no additives whatsoever or you can juice your own (Preffered method). Regular meals should consist of primarily vegetables (lightly steamed or raw). Nutritional supplements should be taken when you eat.
2. At noon on Friday, eat a normal lunch.
3. Three hours after lunch, take two tablespoons of Epsom Salts dissolved in about one ounce of hot water. If the taste is completely objectionable, it may be followed by a little bit of citrus juice (freshly squeezed if possible, again organic is preferred).
4. Two hours later, repeat the Epsom Salts.
5. For the evening meal, you may have grapefruit, grapefruit juice or preferably a fruit salad with a mixture of citrus fruits and 1/2 cup olive oil or coconut oil.
6. At bedtime, you have two choices:
A. Take one half (1/2) cup of warm unrefined olive oil followed by a small glass of grapefruit juice with 15 drops of Black Walnut Tincture to kill parasites.
B. Take one half (1/2) cup of warm unrefined olive oil blended with one half (1/2) cup of lemon juice with 15 drops of Black Walnut Tincture to kill parasites.
Unrefined olive oil can be purchased from your health food store. It is best to use fresh citrus and juice but canned or bottled are permissible if fresh is not available.
7. Go immediately to bed and lie on your right side with the right knee pulled up close to your chest. Remain in this position for at least 30 minutes.
8. The next morning, one hour before breakfast, take two tablespoons of the Epsom Salts in 1 ounce of hot water. This may again be followed by citrus juice if necessary.
What you can expect:
The Epsom Salts alone may work as a laxative. Most people report slight to moderate nausea when taking the olive oil-citrus juice, which slowly disappears by the time you go to sleep. Should you vomit the olive oil it does not need to be repeated at that time. Chances are that you aren’t going to vomit-this only happens on a very rare occasion. This flushing of the liver/gallbladder stimulates and cleans the liver.
Often, people who have suffered for years from gall stones, biliousness, backaches, nausea and other symptoms find gall stones in the stool the following day. These objects are light green to dark green in color. They tend to be irregular in shape, in size from “grape seeds” to “cherries”. If there seems to be a large number of these objects in the stool, the liver flush should be repeated in two weeks.
The first cleanse may rid you of them for a few days, but as the stones from the rear travel forward, they give you the same symptoms again. You may repeat cleanses at two week intervals. Never cleanse when you are [acutely] ill.
Sometimes the bile ducts are full of cholesterol crystals that did not form into round stones. They appear as a ³chaff² floating on top of the toilet bowl water. It may be tan colored, harboring millions of tiny white crystals. Cleansing this chaff is just as important as purging stones.
How safe is the liver cleanse? It is very safe. My opinion is based on over 500 cases, including many persons in their seventies and eighties. None went to the hospital; none even reported pain. However on occasion, it can make you feel quite ill for one or two days. Most people report no adverse side effects once the cleanse is completed.
As you reintroduce food to your system. GO S - L- O - W. Begin by drinking a little bit of broth or warm lemon water. Add raw or lightly steamed veggies and gradually build back into eating grains and meat, if you eat those things.

Exercise
- Strength equals self-sufficiency. Being strong – particularly as a woman – is empowering. It will feel good someday to be able to carry your own luggage down the stairs if the airport escalator is broken, and it will be important to have a solid shot at outrunning a stranger should you meet one in a dark alley.
- Fitness opens doors. Being healthy and fit can help you see the world differently. The planet looks different from a bike or a pair of skis than it does from a car or an airplane. Out in the elements you have the time and space to notice details and meet people and remember smells and bugs and mud and rain and the feeling of warm sunshine on your face. And those are the moments that make up your life.
- The bike is the new golf course. Being fit may help you get a seat at the table. Networking is no longer restricted to the golf course, and the stronger you are – and the more people you can hang with on the road and trail – the more people you’ll meet.
- Exercise is a lifestyle, not an event. Being an active person isn’t about taking a class three times a week at the gym, although working out at the gym is not a bad thing! The lifestyle aspect is about things like biking to the grocery store and parking your car in the back of the lot and walking instead of taking a cab and catching up with friends on a hiking trail instead of a bar stool.
- Health begets health. Healthy behavior inspires healthy behavior. Exercise. Healthy eating. Solid sleep. Positive relationships. These things are all related.
- Endorphins help you cope. A good sweat session can clear the slate. You will have days when nothing seems to go right…when you’re dizzy with frustration or crying in despair. A workout can often turn things around.
- Working out signals hard-working. The discipline required to work out on a regular basis signals success. Someone recently told me they are way more likely to hire marathon runners and mountain climbers because of the level of commitment that goes into those pursuits.
- If you feel beautiful, you look beautiful. Looking beautiful starts on the inside. And being fit and strong feels beautiful.
- Nature rules. And if you’re able to hike/run/bike/swim/ski/snowshoe, you can see more of it.
- Little eyes are always watching. We learn from each other. You may have a child—or a niece/nephew, a neighbor or a friend with a child. Whatever is is, that little person is watching and listening to everything you say and do. What messages are you sending?

Ideally, the pH of our blood should be around 7.35 - 7.45 or slightly alkaline. This balance is so delicate - believe it or not - when the pH drops below 7.0, you could slip into a coma and die. If your pH is too high, you could experience a life-threatening seizure. Along with a poor diet, previously mentioned, emotional stress and toxicity issues (i.e. heavy metal poisoning) can cause pH imbalances which decrease cellular energy and increase the risk of disease.
But, when it comes to the 'right' diet, it can be a bit confusing for the general public. For example, citrus fruits - which are acidic by nature - actually have an 'alkalizing effect' on the body. In fact, many 'acidic' vegetable juices - like, carrot/apple juice - are quite alkalizing in its effect. Conversely, most animal meats are alkaline - before consumption - yet cause lots of acidic residue in the digestive process. Interestingly, when it comes to emotions and lifestyle habits, meditation, prayer, peaceful thoughts, kindness and love are alkalizing. And, quite the opposite effect, being overworked, angry, feeling fearful, jealous or 'stressed out' can make you too acidic.

THIS “MIRACLE HEALTH FOOD” HAS BEEN LINKED TO BRAIN DAMAGE AND BREAST CANCER

If you were to carefully review the thousands of studies published on soy, I strongly believe you would reach the same conclusion as I have—which is, the risks of consuming unfermented soy products FAR outweigh any possible benefits.
Notice I said unfermented soy products.
For centuries, Asian people have been consuming fermented soy products such as natto, tempeh, and soy sauce, and enjoying the health benefits. Fermented soy does not wreak havoc on your body like unfermented soy products do.
Unfortunately, many Americans who are committed to healthy lifestyles have been hoodwinked and manipulated into believing that unfermented and processed soy products like soymilk, soy cheese, soy burgers and soy ice cream are good for them.
How Did Soy Foods Become So Popular?
If it seems like soy foods appeared out of nowhere to be regarded as the “miracle health food” of the 21st Century, it’s because they did.
From 1992 to 2006, soy food sales increased from $300 million to nearly $4 billion, practically overnight, according to the Soyfoods Association of North America. This growth came about due to a massive shift in attitudes about soy. And this shift was no accident—it was the result of a massive investment in advertising by the soy industry that’s been wildly successful.
Soy is indeed big business, very big business.
From 2000 to 2007, U.S. food manufacturers introduced more than 2,700 new soy-based foods, and new soy products continue to appear on your grocer’s shelves.
According to the survey Consumer Attitudes About Nutrition 2008 (by the United Soybean Board):
- -As of 2007, 85 percent of consumers perceive soy products as healthful
- -33 percent of Americans eat soy foods or beverages at least once a month
- -70 percent of consumers believe soybean oil is good for them
- -84 percent of consumers agree with the FDA’s claim that consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily reduces your risk of heart disease
This is a tragic case of shrewd marketing and outright lies taking root among the masses with the end result of producing large profits for the soy industry and impaired health for most who have been deceived into using unfermented soy long-term..
As you can see from the extensive list of articles below, there is a large amount of scientific research showing that soy is not the nutritional panacea of the 21st Century.
The Dark Side of Soy
The vast majority of soy at your local market is not a health food. The exception is fermented soy, which I’ll explain more about later and even worse GMO soy that is contaminated with large pesticide residues as the reason it is GMO is so they can spray the potent toxic herbicide Roundup on them to improve crop production by killing the weeds.
Unlike the Asian culture, where people eat small amounts of whole non-GMO soybean products, western food processors separate the soybean into two golden commodities—protein and oil. And there is nothing natural or safe about these products.
Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of The Whole Soy Story, points out thousands of studies linking soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility—even cancer and heart disease.
Here is just a sampling of the health effects that have been linked to soy consumption:
- -Breast cancer
- -Brain damage
- -Infant abnormalities
- -Thyroid disorders
- -Kidney stones
- -Immune system impairment
- -Severe, potentially fatal food allergies
- -Impaired fertility
- -Danger during pregnancy and nursing
Soy proponents will argue that soy-based foods (they lump the fermented ones with the unfermented) will protect you from everything from colon, prostate and breast cancer to strokes, osteoporosis, and asthma.
But said enthusiasts never mention the studies that illuminate soy’s downside and all of the dangers posed to your health, which are based on sound research.
Another unfortunate fact is that 80 percent of the world’s soy is used in farm animal feed, which is why soy production is contributing to deforestation. Some soy propagandists have suggested that the solution to this is for all of us to become vegetarians—a reckless recommendation rooted in total ignorance about nutrition—whereas a far better solution is a major overhaul in how farm animals are fed and raised.
What Makes Soy Such a Risky Food to Eat?
Here is a summary of soy’s most glaring problems.
- 91 percent of soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GM). The genetic modification is done to impart resistance to the toxic herbicide Roundup. While this is meant to increase farming efficiency and provide you with less expensive soy, the downside is that your soy is loaded with this toxic pesticide. The plants also contain genes from bacteria that produce a protein that has never been part of the human food supply. GM soy has been linked to an increase in allergies. Disturbingly, the only published human feeding study on GM foods ever conducted verified that the gene inserted into GM soy transfers into the DNA of our gut bacteria and continues to function. This means that years after you stop eating GM soy, you may still have a potentially allergenic protein continuously being produced in your intestines.Even more frightening is the potential for GM soy to cause infertility in future generations, which has been evidenced by recent Russian research.
- Soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients. “Soy foods contain anti-nutritional factors such as saponins, soyatoxin, phytates, protease inhibitors, oxalates, goitrogens and estrogens. Some of these factors interfere with the enzymes you need to digest protein. While a small amount of anti-nutrients would not likely cause a problem, the amount of soy that many Americans are now eating is extremely high.
- Soy contains hemagglutinin. Hemagglutinin is a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together. These clumped cells are unable to properly absorb and distribute oxygen to your tissues.
- Soy contains goitrogens Goitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
- Soy contains phytates. Phytates (phytic acid) bind to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc — all of which are co-factors for optimal biochemistry in your body. This is particularly problematic for vegetarians, because eating meat reduces the mineral-blocking effects of these phytates (so it is helpful—if you do eat soy—to also eat meat).
- Soy is loaded with the isoflavones genistein and daidzein Isoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen, which is a plant compound resembling human estrogen. These compounds mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen, and have been found to have adverse effects on various human tissues. Soy phytoestrogens are known to disrupt endocrine function, may cause infertility, and may promote breast cancer in women.Drinking even two glasses of soymilk daily for one month provides enough of these compounds to alter your menstrual cycle. Although the FDA regulates estrogen-containing products, no warnings exist on soy.
- Soy has toxic levels of aluminum and manganeseSoybeans are processed (by acid washing) in aluminum tanks, which can leach high levels of aluminum into the final soy product. Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than is found in human breast milk.
- Soy infant formula puts your baby’s health at risk.Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby’s sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day.Infants fed soy formula have up to 20,000 times the amount of estrogen in circulation as those fed other formulas!
There is also the issue of pesticides and genetic modification.
Soy foods are both heavily sprayed with pesticides and genetically modified (GM). More than 80 percent of the soy grown in the United States is GM. And more than 90 percent of American soy crops are GM.
Since the introduction of GM foods in 1996, we’ve had an upsurge in low birth weight babies, infertility, and other problems in the U.S. population, and animal studies thus far have shown devastating effects from consuming GM soy.
You may want to steer clear of soy products for no other reason than a commitment to avoiding GM foods… unless you wish to be a lab animal for this massive uncontrolled experiment by the biotech industry.
What Soy Products are Good For You?
I want to be clear that I am not opposed to all soy. Soy can be incredibly healthful, but ONLY if it is organic and properly fermented.
After a long fermentation process, the phytate and “anti-nutrient” levels of soybeans are reduced, and their beneficial properties become available to your digestive system.
You may have heard that Japanese people live longer and have lower rates of cancer than Americans because they eat so much soy—but it’s primarily fermented soy that they consume, and it’s always been that way.
Fermented soy products are the only ones I recommend consuming.
These are the primary fermented soy products you’ll find:
-Tempeh a fermented soybean cake with a firm texture and nutty, mushroom-like flavor.
-Miso, a fermented soybean paste with a salty, buttery texture (commonly used in miso soup).
-Natto, fermented soybeans with a sticky texture and strong, cheese-like flavor.
-Soy sauce, which is traditionally made by fermenting soybeans, salt and enzymes; be wary because many varieties on the market today are made artificially using a chemical process.
Please note that tofu is NOT on this list. Tofu is not fermented, so is not among the soy foods I recommend.

Study Says Nut Eaters Have Lower Cancer, Heart Disease Risk
Help yourself to some nuts this holiday season: Regular nut eaters were less likely to die of cancer or heart disease — in fact, were less likely to die of any cause — during a 30-year Harvard study.
Nuts have long been called heart-healthy, and the study is the largest ever done on whether eating them affects mortality.
Researchers tracked 119,000 men and women and found that those who ate nuts roughly every day were 20 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who never ate nuts. Eating nuts also appeared to lower the death risk, in direct proportion to consumption.
The risk of dying of heart disease dropped 29 percent and the risk of dying of cancer fell 11 percent among those who had nuts seven or more times a week compared with people who never ate them.
The benefits were seen from peanuts as well as from pistachios, almonds, walnuts and other tree nuts. The researchers did not look at how the nuts were prepared — oiled or salted, raw or roasted.
A bonus: Nut eaters stayed slimmer.
"There's a general perception that if you eat more nuts you're going to get fat. Our results show the opposite," said Dr. Ying Bao of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
She led the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. The National Institutes of Health and the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation sponsored the study, but the nut group had no role in designing it or reporting the results.
Researchers don't know why nuts may boost health. It could be that their unsaturated fatty acids, minerals and other nutrients lower cholesterol and inflammation and reduce other problems, as earlier studies seemed to show.
Observational studies like this one can't prove cause and effect, only suggest a connection. Research on diets is especially tough, because it can be difficult to single out the effects of any one food.
People who eat more nuts may eat them on salads, for example, and some of the benefit may come from the leafy greens, said Dr. Robert Eckel, a University of Colorado cardiologist and former president of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Ralph Sacco, a University of Miami neurologist who also is a former heart association president, agreed.
"Sometimes when you eat nuts you eat less of something else like potato chips," so the benefit may come from avoiding an unhealthy food, Sacco said.
The Harvard group has long been known for solid science on diets. Its findings build on a major study earlier this year — a rigorous experiment that found a Mediterranean-style diet supplemented with nuts cuts the chance of heart-related problems, especially strokes, in older people at high risk of them.
Many previous studies tie nut consumption to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and other maladies.
In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration said a fistful of nuts a day as part of a low-fat diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. The heart association recommends four servings of unsalted, unoiled nuts a week and warns against eating too many, since they are dense in calories.
The new research combines two studies that started in the 1980s on 76,464 female nurses and 42,498 male health professionals. They filled out surveys on food and lifestyle habits every two to four years, including how often they ate a serving (1 ounce) of nuts.
Study participants who often ate nuts were healthier — they weighed less, exercised more and were less likely to smoke, among other things. After taking these and other things into account, researchers still saw a strong benefit from nuts.
Compared with people who never ate nuts, those who had them less than once a week reduced their risk of death 7 percent; once a week, 11 percent; two to four times a week, 13 percent; and seven or more times a week, 20 percent.
"I'm very confident" the observations reflect a true benefit, Bao said. "We did so many analyses, very sophisticated ones," to eliminate other possible explanations.
For example, they did separate analyses on smokers and non-smokers, heavy and light exercisers, and people with and without diabetes, and saw a consistent benefit from nuts.
At a heart association conference in Dallas this week, Penny Kris-Etherton, a Pennsylvania State University nutrition scientist, reviewed previous studies on this topic.
"We're seeing benefits of nut consumption on cardiovascular disease as well as body weight and diabetes," said Kris-Etherton, who has consulted for nut makers and also served on many scientific panels on dietary guidelines.
"We don't know exactly what it is" about nuts that boosts health or which ones are best, she said. "I tell people to eat mixed nuts."
